Gift Cards Keep Businesses Busy in Slow Months

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – For many businesses, customers cashing in on gift cards after Christmas is just as important as their employees selling them in November and December. Several store managers say it’s the life line for business during the slowest months of the year, January and February.
I think a staggering statistic is 25% of all gift cards sold are never redeemed.
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – For many businesses, customers cashing in on gift cards after Christmas is just as important as their employees selling them in November and December. Several store managers say it’s the life line for business during the slowest months of the year, January and February.

For Darline Dill, gift cards are a blessing around the holiday season especially because her kids live out of town.

"The kids can get whatever they want. It’s a little easier than me picking it out for them, they're a little bit older."

But she still says she's torn between gifts or a gift card.

"I did get some gift cards and gave some gift cards," says Dill.

However for Chris Patrick, the area store manager for Buckle,  he says its how they make the most money during slow months.

"We encourage those a lot more for our guest, as well as, we've made it make sense for them with setting them up with the appointments to come back inside."

He says gift card sales have been up this year than in the past.. According to GiftCards.com, more than a $100 billion are spent on gift cards each year.

"I think a staggering statistic is 25% of all gift cards sold are never redeemed," says Patrick.

He says it helps when people put their gift cards to use during holiday deals right after Christmas. 

"One of our biggest  shopping day of the year is the day after Christmas with all our extra specials."

Karen Burkemper , the Senior Assistant Manager for Charming Charlie, says she sees more gift card sales the first week after Christmas than any time of year.

"We always try to sell as many gift cards as possible so that the customer will always come back."

As for Darline, she says she can stretch her dollars on a gift card better than anyone else.

"My children that are away from here give me gift cards and I’m a really good shopper so I can get two or three times what they would pay if they went in."
