Fire Near Bois D'arc Claims Home - Family Escapes

BOIS D'ARC, Mo. -- Firefighters are trying to stay ahead of the wind on a large grass fire that's already claimed a home.
BOIS D'ARC, Mo. -- Two people escaped a fire that destroyed a home near Bois D'arc on Monday. The blaze spread to nearby grass and brush, but firefighters knocked down flames before the fire reached other structures nearby.
The fire was off Farm Road 11.  No one was hurt, but the fire did destroy a family's home.

"They got out. Everybody's fine," Bois D'arc Fire Chief Jamie Kilburn said. "The home is a total loss."

High winds pushed the flames far into a field behind the home, creating a big job for several fire departments.

"(About) 20 to 25 acres (burned) before we got it knocked down. It did spread quickly. We wound up with at least seven agencies out here," Kilburn said.

The homeowner was too upset to speak with KOLR 10 on camera. She said she wasn't home when the fire broke out, but family members were inside. She was glad they were able to escape uninjured, but distraught over the loss of her home.

Firefighters said despite the wind, they stopped the flames from spreading to other homes.

"We were able to make a stop on the grass fire and the brush fire before it got under at least three other homes and a couple of other structures on the property."

It was not immediately clear what caused the fire.  The state fire marshal will investigate.
