SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- As the cold weather continues , more and more energy is being used.

Empire Electric District issued a peak advisory for Thursday morning asking its customers across four states to reduce their energy use if at all possible.

Empire serves customers in Greene, Christian and several other counties in southwest Missouri, as well as, customers in northern Arkansas, Oklahoma and Kansas.

Amy Bass says Empire issues peak advisories when temperatures dip too low and fuel usage becomes higher.

Although Thursday’s advisory is expired now, they encourage you to conserve energy whenever you can.

KOLR10’s Brett Martin show us way to save energy.

Empire Electric says saving energy can be done easily in your every day routine.

During the peak advisories hours between 7 AM and 11 AM, they ask you only use the necessary items that use electricity. They suggest avoid using the washer and dryer, dishwasher or other things like that.

Bass says during the winter months, the most energy is used during those hours in the morning.

They suggest saving energy by flipping your lights off whenever you are not using them or using daylight often.

Other ways to save energy are unplugging items that use it even when you are not. Bass suggests unplugging items, like cell phone chargers, lap tops and other electronics, if possible.

By lowering your thermostat to 65 degrees can help save you money, as well. Each degree you are able to afford during the cold temperatures can reduce your bill by 3%.

Amy Bass says if the temperature continues to stay this low, they may issue another advisory before the end of winter.

I spoke with City Utilities’ Joel Alexander to find out if they would be issuing an advisory any time soon. He says they reached their peak earlier this year on January 6th.
