Efforts to Save Timmons Temple Get Big Boost

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A major donation is moving efforts closer to saving an historic church in Springfield.
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A major donation is moving efforts closer to saving an historic church in Springfield.

The "Save Timmons Temple" citizens committee says it has received $70,000 from Greenway Studios to help relocate the church.

This spring, the Springfield City Council approved re-zoning to allow the sale of the church to go forward.

Greenway Studios, LLC bought the land where the church stands at 934 E Webster Street in Springfield.  It was originally scheduled to be torn down to make way for Greenway Studio Apartments.  But preservationists started a campaign to raise money to move the church to Silver Springs Park.

Greenway Studios, LLC has been working with the citizens group, the Springfield-Greene County Park Board and the Community Foundation of the Ozarks to help with the effort.
About $20,000 is still needed to move the church and set it on a foundation at the park.

Timmons Temple was built in 1932 and has been a place of worship for nearly four generations for local African-Americans.
