SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms Thursday afternoon into evening.    Several of these storms produced large hail and minor wind damage in a number of counties.

The National Weather Service in Springfield issued this summary of storm reports across the region:

A strong area of low pressure tracked north of the Missouri Ozark during the day on Thursday. Strong and gusty southerly winds developed to the south of this low pressure, with several reports of wind gusts in the 40 to 50 mph range. The Joplin observing station measured a wind gust of 53 mph around 130 PM on Thursday.

Meanwhile, these strong southerly winds brought mild conditions along with increasing moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms then developed from Thursday afternoon into Thursday evening out ahead of an approaching cold front. Several of these storms produced large hail, with a few reports of ping pong ball size hail in Morgan County.

This activity then consolidated into a broken line of storms and pushed across the central and eastern Missouri Ozarks later Thursday evening. A few more reports of large hail were received with these storms.
