Ducks Mean Big Business for Local Game Call Maker

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- You've all heard of the family that started out making duck calls and turned into TV stars on Duck Dynasty, but we have our own Ozarks version here in Springfield, just without the TV show.
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- You've all heard of the family that started out making duck calls and turned into TV stars on Duck Dynasty, but we have our own Ozarks version here in Springfield, just without the TV show.

Kory Cribb started Falling Feathers Game Calls five years ago.

He was a student at OTC, an avid hunter, and was working out of his backyard workshop.

The business has become a big success since those days and he expects to grow even more in the next year.

In Kory Cribb's workshop, every season is duck season.

The owner of Falling Feathers is busy filling orders by making his handmade game calls.

"Every call is like an instrument," he said.

Cribb has spent every day for the last five years building his small business right here in the Ozarks.

"It's taken every single dime that I've ever had and put it into this and it's been non-stop," he said.

But he said it's worth it for his passion, the sport of hunting.

The business grew from his own experience buying and using calls as a kid.

"We were doing this before duck hunting was cool and now duck hunting is cool, duck calls are cool," he said.

He credits the recent rise in popularity to the show Duck Dynasty.

"It's helping us out a ton, I call it the Duck Dynasty movement," he said, "New people are wanting to learn every day so it's growing our sport huge."

And those new hunters will need calls.

Cribb said that's where he comes in.

"We'll tune it for you as a beginner and as you progress and get better we'll keep tuning the call for you," he said.

Cribb said he loves to teach people about the calls, so he offered to show me the ropes.

Like many of his first time customers, I had never even picked up a duck call before, but I gave it a shot.

Turns out it's pretty easy and fun at the same time.

And that's what Cribb said this is all about.

Sharing his passion of game calls and hunting, while building a business he hopes grows right along with the sport.
