Downtown Springfield: Deals for Black Friday, Small Business Saturday

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Some shoppers hit big box stores on Thanksgiving or camped out for sales outside chain stores early this morning, but downtown Springfield emphasized its own unique offerings to lure shoppers.
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Some shoppers hit big box stores on Thanksgiving or camped out for sales outside chain stores early this morning, but downtown Springfield emphasized its own unique offerings to lure shoppers.

Some stores downtown saw rushes of their own today and they are actively preparing for "Small Business Saturday", tomorrow's shopping event. Retailers say during Small Business Saturday the approach is a little more relaxed and the payoff is a lot more unique.

You won't find any shoving or running for deals at Springfield Hot Glass Studio, "We always do an event for Black Friday and then the following Small Business Saturday, we do demonstrations, we have a lot of items put on the sales table," Gabriel Bloodworth, of Springfield Hot Glass Studio says.

Mark Hillenburg and his family made an effort to bypass the mall while shopping, he says they are trying to avoid the craziness. Hillenburg did some of his shopping online but he says the downtown shops offer something truly different, "I mean look around, this is art, this is really cool and it's all made right here and of course, they're doing it live."

A few blocks away at 5 Pound Apparel customers started lining up early.

"We are over on South Street and we had a line down to Walnut Street, the first person said they got here at 4:00 a.m.," Bryan Simpson of 5 Pound Apparel says of Black Friday. Simpson says his store and others downtown can't and won't try to compete with the big box stores, "We want it to be more special and act like we put a little more thought into where we got it and how we made it."

Gabriel Bloodworth says a successful season is still crucial, "For the gallery we have to have a really heavy Christmas because that not only determines how this year goes but that also determines what we can purchase for next year."

The itsalldowntown.com website lets you know all the deals each individual store is having for Black Friday and Small Business Saturday.
