SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Community leaders are making a promise to every child. On Monday, the Every Child Promise 10-year plan was unveiled.

It was developed by more than 500 people. The goal is to improve access to support services for children up to age six and help them be better prepared for kindergarten.

Organizers say helping kids learn and grow earlier will help cut down on incarceration and drop-out rates later.

“Eighty percent of children's brain development happens before the age of three,” says Dana Carroll. “So if we can get to children when they are just really starting to grow and form their ideas and concepts and moral belief, it'll last their lifetime.”

It’s estimated that one in five children in Springfield is not ready to learn when they reach kindergarten. This plan aims to change that.
