Charity Championship Celebrates 25 Years

The Price Cutter Charity Championship is one of four events on the Web.com tour celebrating 25 years.
SPRINGFIELD, Mo--The 25th annual Price Cutter Charity Championship will tee off Thursday morning at Highland Springs Country Club.

There are 25 stops on this Web.com tour, six of those outside the United States.

But only four will celebrate a silver anniversary this year.

KOLR 10's Megan Rice has more.

The Price Cutter Charity Championship has been around for a quarter of a century.

"It's really exciting and obviously being only one of four events on the web.com tour that's been around since 1990. I think it speaks volumes," said Tournament Director Jerald Andrews.

And after all these years the tournaments done a lot more than just affect the Ozarks.

Andrews: "The event has given away nearly 11 million dollars over the last 24 years. Which has touched thousands and thousands of childrens lives and their families lives."

25 years ago, the event benefited four chairities...this year there's 46.

"This year our goal is to give away a million dollars in one year. That's unbelievable. When this tour started it was very small by comparison and today it is quiet an ordeal," said Director of Golf, Brian Maloney.

While many people have contributed to make this silver anniversary happen, you have to credit the host.

Maloney: "Only two clubs have hosted it all 25 years, so it is pretty special to be one of those very select few."

And helping get Highland Springs to where it is now, golf course superintendent Ken Smith, he's been there from the start and is set to retire this year.

"When I first walked around the golf course all I saw was rock and clay. I can't take all the credit, I just put the finishing touches on it," said Ken Smith.  "There is nothing more satisfying then going out in the morning and seeing the beauty of the land. Just a tremendous place to work."

The first 25 years have brought endless memories, and the future hopes to bring many more.

In Springfield, Megan Rice KOLR 10 sports.
