Cards Name Matheny As New Skipper

The St. Louis Cardinals named Mike Matheny as the team's new manager.
(St. Louis, MO)--The St. Louis Cardinals went from having the longest tenured manager in major league baseball.

To a rookie who's never filled out a lineup card.

St. Louis officially introduced Mike Matheny as the clubs new manager Monday.

41-year old Mike Matheny is a gold glove catcher with 13 years of big league experience.

He spent five years in the Cardinals organization.

Matheny has been a roving minor league instructor in the Cards organization for the last two years but has no managerial experience.

".When you think about the positives that he brings to the table," said Cards general manager John Mozeliak.  "His interactions with our current players.  We felt that he would be the most seamless transition or anybody we could consider."

"There's a high level of expectation," said new Cards manager Mike Matheny.  "And there's a high level of what has been known as the Cardinal way that I plan to carry through with.  It's not something that I'll take lightly.  Putting the birds on the bat on my chest is something that I know is not to be taken lightly.  And it's something I will not take for granted for one day."
