New City Bus Transfer Station to Have Improved Accessibility

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Each day hundreds of people use the city bus to get around, but for the disabled some of the bus stops and stations are not easy to navigate.

"The construction standards were completely different pre-1990 than they are now," Southwest Center for Independent Living CEO Gary Maddox said.

Maddox hopes to see some improvements when the old city bus transfer station is moved and completely re-designed next year.

"The accessibility component for us especially is at the forefront of our mind," he said, "We want our transportation system to be as inclusive as possible."

The new station will be at Main Street and College in downtown Springfield.

Architect Brent Stevens and his team are tasked with transforming it into a 21-st century facility.

"Not just accessible, but universally designed for all different types of people," he said.

"If you put a curb cut and a curb, not only can a person with a disability use it, but a young mother with a stroller can use it," Maddox said.

Stevens says ADA standards will just be a starting point for the design.

"We've got to look at lighting, we've got to look at curbing, we've got to look at ramps," he said.

To make sure every rider can get on the bus.

City Utilities will host three public forums sessions to discuss the construction of a new transfer station.

The goal of the informal sessions is to get input from the community and stakeholders regarding the design and features incorporated into the new station.

The forums will be held at the following locations and times:

  • 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m., Thursday, June 5: CU Transit Office - 1505 N. Boonville (Corner of Boonville and Division)
  • 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., Friday, June 6: Butler, Rosenbury & Partners' Community Room - 319 N. Main
  • 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., Friday, June 6: The Veridian Event Center - 309 South Avenue
