The summer movie season rolls on with three new releases this weekend.  Chris the Critic with the Missouri Film Alliance has a look at what's new, what's tops and local events.

NEW THIS WEEK:
HERCULES - Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson trained for 8 grueling months to play this Greek demigod.
LUCY - This is the Scarlett Johansson action flick where she turns into a merciless warrior.  Tidbit of casting info … Angelina Jolie was originally cast in this lead role and dropped out.

TOPS AT THE BOX OFFICE:
1.    DAWN OF PLANET OF THE APES - GREAT flick! Great special effects!  Great acting from Andy Serkis, who is the main ape, Caesar.
2.    PURGE:  ANARCHY - This is a very good sequel, a very original story and pretty darn scary!
3.    PLANES:  FIRE & RESCURE
4.    SEX TAPE - This rated R comedy is hilarious and well done all the way through + great usage of the hilarious Robe Lowe and Jack Black!
5.    is very good TRANSORMERS 4.
*at #11 is BEGIN AGAIN, which is the indie feeling film starring Ruffalo and Knightly that I really, really enjoyed.  Especially if you're a music lover!

NEW ON DVD:
TRANSCENDENCE - This is one of THE worst of the year … not even worth a $1 rental by the way!  This is the Johnny Depp flick about artificial intelligence.  Stop boring the heck out of us … you're better than this!
HEAVEN IS FOR REAL - This is the true story about a young boy who almost dies and sees heaven.  It stars Greg Kinnear.  The beauty of the Christian based flick is that it only had a $12-million budget … which is major low in the movie world AND as far as Christian films go, does not beat you over the head with religion.

LOCALLY:
The Family Summer Series has 3 weeks left at The Wehrenberg Campbell 16!  Each Wednesday & Thursday through August 7th at 10am, you can see a great movie for JUST ONE-DOLLAR!  Check wehrenberg.com for details on the weekly show!
This is (in my opinion) the BEST weekend picks for the outdoor movies at Founders Park!  Again, this is so cool, just like the BIG city!  Tomorrow it's WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY (Just a quick question for you long time fans?  Do you remember, since Willy Wonka won't let anyone into the factory, Who makes the chocolates? Yep, the Oompa-Loompas) & Saturday it's 50 FIRST DATES (one of the multiple Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler flicks…this one was filmed in Hawaii by the way) !  See Parkboard.org for ALL the details and how to get free tix!
