Celebration of 'Birthplace of Route 66' Starts Tonight

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Downtown Springfield plays host to the Birthplace of Route 66 Festival this weekend.

Things kick off tonight with a ribbon cutting to dedicate the new Route 66 Roadside Park on West College near Fort. 
A replica of the Red's Giant Hamburg sign will a major feature in the park.

Tonight's events also include a free drive-in movie at 9:00 p.m. "Back to the Future" will be shown on the side of the Springfield Expo Center.
And Route 66 Rail Haven will host a Classic Car Cruise-in att St. Louis and Glenstone at 4:30 p.m., and cruising Route 66 to the Roadside Park.
   

Here's the schedule of events for the rest of the weekend:

Friday, Aug. 8

4:30 - Classic car "cruise" in forms at St. Louis Street and Glenstone Avenue at Best Western Route 66 Rail Haven and travels to the site of the future Birthplace of Route 66 Roadside Park on College.

7:00 p.m. - Birthplace of Route 66 Roadside Park Ribbon cutting and party featuring the dedication of a replica Red's Giant Hamburg sign within the park.

9:00 p.m. - "Back to the Future" drive-in movie on the side of the Springfield Expo Center, presented by Springfield-Greene County Park Board.

 

Saturday, Aug. 9

7:30 a.m. - 5K Run/Walk to benefit the Route 66 development fund aimed at improving and restoring historic Route 66 through Springfield and promoting Springfield as the Birthplace of the Mother Road.

Location: Hollywood Theaters at 415 W. College St.
Cost: $20, $25 on race day; Race day registration will be 6:30-7:15 a.m.
Awards: Overall male and female finishers, overall male and female masters and top finishers in each division.

10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m - Classic Car Show on the Park Central Square and surrounding streets

10:00 a.m. - Live Music: Blue Plate Special & Rockabilly Cats

Noon –- Live Music: Big Iron Band

2:00 p.m. - Live Music: The Detectives

4:00 p.m. - Classic Car Show awards

5:00 p.m. - Mark Bilyeu & Cindy Woolf

7:00 p.m. - First-Ever Birthplace of Route 66 Concert featuring the Ozark Mountain Daredevils (live at the Gillioz and via simulcast on a 16 X 30 screen at the Square).
