Big-Ticket Items on Sale For Presidents' Day Weekend

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Presidents' Day is a national holiday in celebration of our nation's leaders of the past and present. For retailers, it's the first big sales event of the year.

"Presidents' Day is absolutely one of the best times of the year to look into appliances," said Jace Enlow, a sales associate at Best Buy.

Shiny stove top ovens, washers and dryers, and decked out refrigerators are some of the household appliances with big discounts at this time of year.

"This is going to be my absolutely best top of line four- door Samsung. You get the massive four-door French style with your full water, ice--everything that you need. And then storage capacity for days," Enlow said. "This is the creme de la creme of refrigerators."

The savings on refrigerators can range from a few hundreds of dollars up to a little over $900. Consumers can also find deep discounts on both medium and high-end TV screens.

This is that time of year when retailers are looking to get rid of old inventory to clear their shelves and showrooms. This means bargain prices for big ticket items.

Ashley Berg of Ashley Furniture HomeStore says President's Day is a big weekend for sales.

"Presidents' Day, for whatever reason, is a big weekend in mattress sales," Berg said.

Mattresses on sale are as much as 20-percent off-- for a $2000, that's $400 in savings.

But are consumers buying into the discounts?

Philip and Kerry Hopkins said they have shopped around at different retailers to find a refrigerator.

"We've seen several different deals that are appealing," said Philip Hopkins. "We just haven't really figured out what's the best deal for us yet."

"I think it's a combination of sales and tax return time," said Kerry Hopkins. "Good combination."

For others, not so much. Matthew and Hiedi Earwood said they have been looking to buy a mattress.

"Sale prices don't motivate me to purchase," said Matthew Earwood. The couple said after testing out a nearly full-priced TempurPedic, they decided to choose comfort over price.

"We laid on the TempurPedic, unfortunately," said Heidi Earwood.
