Beer Giants Reveal Ingredients After Petition Push

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The nation’s two biggest beer makers are now disclosing ingredients in their brews.
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The nation’s two biggest beer makers are now disclosing ingredients in their brews.

Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors published their ingredients online after foodblogger Vani Hari, writer of FoodBabe.com, made a petition to push the companies for the list.

According to Hari, within 24 hours of the creation of the petition on Wednesday, over 43,000 signatures were collected.

MillerCoors and Anheuser-Busch posted statements on their Facebook pages.

MillerCoors says, while it isn’t required to post ingredients on their website or on labels, the company values quality, safety and transparency.

“Earlier this year, we led all alcohol companies by voluntarily placing a nutritional label on our Miller64 brand and we will be putting more ingredient information online in the days ahead,” says the MillerCoors statement. “We will be including the ingredient list starting with our most popular brands, representing the overwhelming majority of our brand volume.”

Anheuser-Busch posted a similar statement, saying ingredients for Budweiser and Bud Light have been made available online. Ingredients for other brands will be made available “in the coming days.”

On its website, tapintoyourbeer.com, Anheuser-Busch lists the same ingredients for Budweiser and Bud Light: Water, barley malt, rice, yeast and hops.  MillerCoors listed similar ingredients for their brews on their Facebook page.

Representatives from Anheuser-Busch invited Hari and her family to visit its brewery in St. Louis to see how its beers are made.

The blogger is known for investigating foods and brands such as Subway, Chick-fil-a and Trader Joe’s.

"It’s pretty amazing that making your voice heard can change the policies of a multi-billion dollar company overnight," Hari says on her website.

Hari hopes to gather more signatures on her petition and get other beer companies to list their ingredients.
