Customer Foils Attempted Robbery, Shoots at Fleeing Suspects

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Springfield police are sorting through the details of a attempted robbery and shooting overnight at a convenience store.
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Springfield police are sorting through the details of a attempted robbery and shooting overnight at a convenience store.

Lt. Greg Wheelen says it happened shortly after 4:00 a.m. at the Kum 'n Go store at 2506 W. College when two men showed up at the store.

One went inside, armed with a gun. The second man stayed outside the store, Lt. Wheelen said.

A customer got the gun away from the man, police say, although they didn't say how he disarmed him. Lt. Wheelen says the two would-be robbers started to run and the customer fired two shots.

Lt. Wheelen did not say if they think either man was hit.  Witnesses say the suspects ran east and got into a car to get away.

Public Information Officer Lisa Cox says officers don't recommend taking action in a situation like this.

"We would advise them to stay an uninvolved as possible and to keep a safe distance and take in as much of the scene as they possibly can."

Investigators are looking for one man wearing a black ball cap and a multi-colored mask.  The other man was wearing sunglasses and a purple bandana over his face.
