Cold Cravings Still Strong Despite Weather

JOPLIN, Mo. -- The temperatures may be freezing, but that isn't' stopping people from craving a cold treat.

Workers at Braum's in Joplin say cold weather doesn't deter people from buying ice cream.

They have sold several dozen milk shakes, sundaes and ice cream cones.

Managers say a little snow on the ground doesn't stop their regulars from coming in.

We've witnessed some near record cold temperatures over the last couple days, but evidently some people want to get colder.

You know it may be one of the coldest days in recent memory but that did not stop peoples craving for ice cream.

Evidently the hot spot to be in Joplin was at Braum's. People kept coming in the door all with a certain craving for ice cream.

Zack rakes is the manager and he said that ice cream craving happened early Monday morning.
"Every morning at 6:15 someone orders a large chocolate shake," Rakes says.

And he has to bundle up to work the drive through window.
"Gloves and a jacket. You dont' want to keep the window open any more than you have to and let the cold air in," he says.

Walter Hodge is a self confessed ice cream lover. "I'd rather have ice cream than beer. I'll take ice cream everytime."

And he doesn't mind that it's single digits outside. He got hooked on ice cream at a young age.
"My granddad would fee me ice cream until I started shivering."

He and his wife, Venita, have been married for 29 years and she knows all too well about his cravings for ice cream. In fact one of their first dates was to get ice cream. "Yeah we had to got the Plaza and Topsey's and get ice cream," Venita remembers.

But she says when it gets cold outside, she's not interested.  "It'll make me cold. I like sweets, buu I don't want ice cream."

And surprisingly, Walter has been ice cream free for a while. "I haven't had ice cream in a whole week."

And he says he doesn't feel sorry for the workers having to man the drive through window.
"I don't feel sorry. Hand me that ice cream out to me. It's all about me."

It's estimated that the average American consumes a little more than 5 gallons of ice cream each year.
