CARTHAGE, MO.--- The Carthage Police Department is going bilingual. Several officers are enrolled in a 30 week Spanish class.

They will download the lesson plans online and listen to them on their computer and iPods. Police Chief Greg Dagnan says with the growing hispanic population, it's important to be able to communicate in more than one language.

"Everyday when you stop someone for a simple traffic violation, then find they don't speak English, being able to communicate what you'd like them to do, what you need for them to do. In the old days, we'd let them go or wait for an interpret to get there," Dagnan says.

Carthage residents can also enroll in the plan for a discounted rate. If you'd like to learn more, you can call 417-237-7200.
