Cards Give Matheny Extension

St. Louis gives Mike Matheny a three year contract extension.
ST. LOUIS, Mo--The St. Louis Cardinals have a long and storied history in major league baseball.

But in the 100-plus years, no manager has ever led the Redbirds to back to back post season appearances in his first two seasons in the dugout.

That is until Mike Matheny did that this October.

And Wednesday the Cardinals rewarded Matheny with a three year contract extension.

This year's team won the National League, last year's team lost in game seven of the NLCS to the Giants.

Matheny's new deal will keep him in a Cardinals uniform through the 2017 season.

The former St. Louis catcher appreciates his team's vote of confidence.

"I do love what I do.  I would love to do this anywhere," said Mike Matheny.  "But to do this here in the place I call home is extremely special.  When you look at all the factors that go into that with how this organization is put together from top to bottom.."

"I really believe that he loves what he's doing," said Cards general manager John Mozeliak.  "When you have a manager that embraces the culture and what's expected in the organization.  It really makes for that special fit and it's a wonderful combination."
