Boys and Girls Club to Build New Facility Inside Sherwood Elementary

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A partnership between the Boys and Girls Club of Springfield and Springfield Public Schools will benefit more families.

The new Sherwood Elementary School will be adjoined to a new Boys and Girls Club, the fourth in Springfield.  It's expected to be complete in the fall of 2015.

The new project is actually the first of its kind in the entire state of Missouri.

The new Sherwood Elementary School is going in on the southwest side of town.  It will include a 5,500 square foot full service Boys and Girls Club.

The Boys and Girls Club of Springfield already serves around 3,000 kids and the organization expects to serve another 500.

The Boys and Girls Club will be building a fourth location.  This one, inside the new Sherwood Elementary School.  The Springfield School Board approved the contract Tuesday night.

It's been the Boys and Girls Club's goal to provide youth services on the southwest side of town.

"The kids at the current Sherwood School are 60% free and reduced lunch," says Boys and Girls Club Executive Director Pat Gartland.  "And Jeffries Elementary, which is close by, has 300 kids on free and reduced lunches.  So the demand is there for our services.  We serve all kids with a special emphasis on 'at risk' kids."

The partnership allows the Boys and Girls Club to build a smaller space then share things like the gym, cafeteria, tech lab, library, art room and other designated areas with the school.

"It's a win win," says Gartland.  "It's great for taxpayers because they're getting value for their dollars out of the schools and it's a great partnership for us to be in that area and great for the kids and families on the southwest side of town."

The new Boys and Girls Club at Sherwood Elementary will allow more kids on the south side a chance for after school activities and games.

"I think it's the best way to spend your time after school," says 6th Grader Clifford Barratt, who has been involved with the club for six years.  "We just get to come here and have fun."

The new facility will provide one more place for students to learn and grow.

"It provides a great service for our community," says Springfield Schools Associate Superintendent Dr. Ben Hackenwerth.  "So it's always exciting to do something unique and different, but being able to partner like this is even more fulfilling."

Kids do not have to attend Sherwood to go to the Boys and Girls Club.

The idea to do this came from the Boys and Girls Club of Toledo.

The club's goal is to raise $1.8 million for the project.  The Sertoma Club pledged $500,000 for the campaign, and now the Boys and Girls Club is raising money for the rest.
