Benton County Flood Victims Denied Individual Assistance

BENTON COUNTY, Ark. -- Property owners will not receive state help for uninsured losses suffered in last months floods.
BENTON COUNTY, Ark. -- Property owners will not receive state help for uninsured losses suffered in last months floods.

County property damaged in the floods on August 8th will qualify, but Benton County's Director of Emergency Management Robert McGowen says the number of uninsured homes that were hit did not meet the threshold to qualify for state aid. The Arkansas Department of Emergency Management says individual assistance is only allowed when a "reasonable amount," or a majority of homes suffer major damage or are destroyed.

McGowen says some of the property owners are upset with the decision, but now they are on their own.

"That decision is out of our hands," he says. "That's up to the state. We've submitted all we can to the state and we've done all that we could to try to get that assistance for individuals."

Next week county officials will meet with FEMA for an applicant briefing, but the McGowan says full repairs will take quite a while.
Project officers must visit every single site to determine the cost of construction and the county has more than 200 sites on the list.
