PULASKI COUNTY, Mo. -- A soldier is killed and another is in serious condition following an ATV crash in Pulaski County overnight.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says Timothy R. Panzar, 25, was driving the all-terrain vehicle on Hartford Road about a mile north of Missouri Highway 28.

Shortly after 2:30 a.m. the vehicle became airborne, struck a tree, flipped over and landed in the Big Piney River.

Both Panzar (photo above) and his passenger -- Erik D. Kolbow, 33, of Fort Leonard Wood -- were tossed into the river. Panzar was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before 5 a.m.

Kolbow was airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Springfield where he's listed in serious condition.

A spokesman for Fort Leonard Wood confirms both Panzar and Kolbow were currently assigned to the 4th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade. According to his Facebook page, Panzer and his wife are from Leeper, Pennsylvania.

It's unclear at this time what caused the crash.

We'll post updates here as we get them.
