ARKANSAS--Just weeks since enrollment began for the Affordable Care Act and 56, 000 people told the Arkansas Department of Health they want to be a part of the Arkansas Health Care Independence Program.
This is also known as the "private option" health insurance program.
About 54,000 applicants were current DHS Clients. "We knew those with the greatest medical needs would be most eager to enroll. Many have probably been without coverage for a while so I'm not surprised by the number," DHS Director John Selig said. "This shows a need for us to continue our outreach efforts to younger and healthier people who are eligible for the program."
From October 1 to October 12, DHS received over 2, 500 applications through the web, telephone, and paper applications.
About 10, 500 applicants have already completed the enrollment process.
