SPRINGFIELD, Mo--Ozarks area sports fans are mourning the death of long time high school basketball coach Larry Atwood.

Atwood died Sunday at the age of 78.

Larry Atwood coached for nearly three decades, winning 545 games and was a member of both the Springfield area and Missouri sports hall of fames.

For 21 seasons, Atwood coached high school basketball at Greenwood.

He led the Blue Jays to second place finishes in both 1980 and 1982.

Atwood did win a state championship at Buffalo in 1965.

He also coached at Weaubleau and Clever before that.

Atwood was also the long time director of the annual Blue and Gold high school tournament that has been a Springfield Christmas tradition for decades.

Atwood retired in 1990 but worked Missouri State basketball games until earlier this season.

Funeral services at Greenlawn East are still pending.
