SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - New Covenant Academy and Crane will have to wait until Thursday evening to determine the Class 2 District 11 baseball champion.
The district host NCA Warriors early 3-0 on a Ryan Rodgers RBI-single in the second inning, but Crane clawed back to tie it on a Nicholas Brannan base hit in the fourth.
The Warriors retook the lead after an error in the bottom of the fourth, but the Pirates put pressure on in the sixth. With the tying run on second base with one out, Heath Quick's line drive on the left side of the infield looked like the game-tying hit. But sophomore shortstop Timmy Smith sprinted and stretched to make the catch, then threw back to second for the inning-ending double play.
At the start of the bottom half of the sixth inning, umpires suspended play due to lightning. The teams will resume the district championship game at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, with NCA leading 4-3.
