Morning Sports Report - March 2, 2017

WILLARD, Mo--The road to Columbia and a state high school basketball championship continued Wednesday night around the Show-Me State.

In Willard, the Strafford Lady Indians faced Mt. Vernon in a Class 3 sectional.

The Strafford Lady Indians won the state championship last year.

And took a perfect 29-0 record into Wednesday night's game.

Mt. Vernon's Cameron Call with the step back three, it's a tied game early.

Strafford taking it down low to Hayley Frank for the easy two it's 7-6 Lady Indians.

Strafford looking to Frank again, this time she passes out of the double team, Zoey Mullings with the hoop it's 11-10 Lady Indians.

Mt. Vernon not going away, it's Call again with the three ball, 13-11 Mountaineers.

But Strafford wins 61-45 and advances to Saturday's quarterfinals against Southern Boone County.

WILLARD, Mo--On the boys side in Class 3, the Fair Grove Eagles faced Lamar.

Fair Grove has won 23 games this season, Lamar 22.

Lamar's Ian Moore takes it into the paint and makes the jumper, that was too easy it's 24-18 Tigers.

This got interesting late, Fair Grove's Garrett Kesterson with the three pointer and we're tied at 46.

Lamar's Trey Mooney spins down the lane and gets the basket, it's 55-54 Tigers.

But Fair Grove's perimeter game would win the contest, Evan Fullerton with the three pointer, it's 57-55 Eagles.

And Fair Grove holds on and wins 63-56.

The Eagles will play Mountain Grove in the Class 3 quarterfinals Saturday night at the O'Reilly Family Event Center.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo--The Drury men and women are set to tip off Great Lakes Valley Conference post season tournament action at the end of the week.

The eighth ranked Lady Panthers are the top seed and will face Maryville Friday at noon in the quarterfinals.

Wednesday, the GLVC named forward Hailey Diestelkamp as the conference Freshman of the Year.

The forward is averaging nearly 19 points per game and eight and a half rebounds  a game for Drury.

The Owensville native also averaged three steals a game.

Diestelkamp becomes the third Drury Lady Panther to be named Freshman of the Year.

Diestelkamp was also put on the second team All-GLVC.

Heather Harman was named first team All-Conference.

Paige Wilson named to the second team.

And Daejah Bernard and Briana Jones were both put on the third team All-GLVC.

On the mens side, Drury's Tevon Foster was named second team.

Kickapoo product Isaac Johnson was put on the all-freshman team.

And guard John Williams was put on the conference's all-defense team.
