Washington D.C. Newspaper Offers to Pay Marijuana Fines

Item: Washington, D.C. has reportedly enacted a new law that decriminalizes the possession of less than an ounce of marijuana for personal use. Before midnight on Wednesday, July 16, it cost you six months of jail time and a $1,000 fine if you were caught with it. Thursday, however, was a new day. Now, carrying a little bit of weed will set you back just $25—and Washington City Paper says it wants to pay it for you.

Why it Matters: It seems more and more that people are willing to step over boundaries as the restrictions gain slack. We’ve watched casual boundary stretching go to extremes with things such as Fifty Shades of Grey, and the trend continues to move forward beyond recreating fictional worlds and into decriminalization and the downplay of what a boundary line even is.
