Geek Bar Chicago

Geek Bar Chicago

Item: Tapping into the “tribal” nature of geek culture, a few friends are putting together what they say is not just a bar, but also a community hub for self-proclaimed nerds from all walks of life. With supporters such as the Illinois Science Council, the Museum of Science and Industry, the thousands of people in the Chicago Games Lovers organization, the Chicago Nerd Social Club and Three Floyds Brewery—a craft beer house that specializes in beers inspired by Dungeons & Dragons—they’re not just creating a bar or a hang-out spot, but a focal point for an entire regional community. The founders recognize that moving beyond niche means being a part of something bigger—and even incorporates it into their business strategy.

Why it Matters: There’s a new front emerging within small communities, one that connects the cliques. Words such as “geek” are often vague and encompass multiple smaller subcultures; however, when given a place to feel comfortable, they can unite under one cultural banner for an amount of time and celebrate everything for which the different aspects of their cultures stand. This new wave of community integration is taking niche groups within a subculture and giving them regional hubs where they can connect and converse.
