Woman Charged for Drunk Driving Death in 2015 Accident

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.-- A woman has been charged in the drunk driving death of Leslee Owrey who was killed in a car crash on December 5, 2016.

Melissa Mahan has been charged with first-degree involuntary manslaughter as she recorded a blood alcohol content of .295%

Law enforcement at the scene observed that Mahan smelled strongly of alcohol and exhibited slurred, mumbled, and confused speech. Mahan admitted that she had been drinking.

The Highway Patrol said Owrey, from Fair Play, died shortly before 8:00 p.m. Monday, December 5 on James River Freeway just outside the Springfield city limits near Scenic Avenue.

The crash happened when a Nissan Sentra, driven by Mahan, side swiped the driver's side door of Owrey's car, causing it run off the road, flip over and throw Owrey out.  She was pronounced dead at a Springfield hospital.

Highway Patrol online arrest reports show the driver of the first car was arrested for felony DWI and involuntary manslaughter at the time of the accident.
