People in the community are slowly recovering and cleaning up what the flood waters left behind.
Saturday was the Tenth Annual Feed the Children Back to School Extravaganza, and although it happens every year, this year, it was especially important in light of the devastating floods.
"It was raining really badly, and the water got really deep, it came all the way up to the porch,” says Shontay Robinson, a flood victim.
The floods that recently ripped through Waynesville have left many people shaken up.
Shontay Robinson is one of them.
"I thought I was going to die, because I can't swim," says Robinson.
She attended the Extravaganza today to receive some of the amenities offered to her children and grandchildren.
"We don't have much," says Robinson. "Even though we get food stamps, sometimes it gets a little tight."
More than 400 families received boxes of food and hygiene products through the Feed the Children network, which was a much-needed relief for many families who lost nearly everything just a few weeks ago.
"We have 1,300 book bags filled with school supplies, haircuts, dental exams, eye exams, sno-cones, just a great day to let the kids know that we love them,” says Susan Marshall, the organizer of the annual event.
She says it came at an extremely important time this year.
"If you go visit some of the areas behind West Side Baptist church, the trailer parks, everything was lost, and their everything wasn't that much."
"Most of us in that trailer park came out lucky,” adds Robinson. She says what was damaged can be replaced.
"The rooms, the carpets got wet, and the walls molded a little bit," says Robinson.
And she's thankful she still has something that can never be replaced.
"I got a second chance at life," says Robinson. "We really appreciate everything everybody has done for us. It could have easily been me and my family that they were burying, instead of that woman and her one son. It could have been me and my family and I’m very grateful that it wasn't."
Feed the Children is one of the largest international charities based in the U.S. Besides helping to combat hunger and poverty, it responds in times of disaster to provide emergency supplies for those in need.
