BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. -- The city of Baxter Springs, Kansas is picking up after a tornado hits the city. 

Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves says the storm hit around Bagcraft Papercon and made its way down Military Avenue.

Emergency managers say several homes and businesses in downtown Baxter Springs were destroyed.

Authorities were focusing Sunday night on helping victims and looking for survivors.  Assessment of the extent of damage will begin Monday.

Crews have checked the tornado zone 3 times and have sent surrounding area law enforcement agents home.
A curfew was declared Sunday night.

Anyone who received damaged or was in need of assistance was asked to go to the Baxter Community Center or First Baptist Church.

As a result of the storms, Baxter Springs schools will be closed Monday.

Anyone interested in volunteering in Baxter Springs is asked to report to Baxter City Hall, located at 1445 Military Avenue. You must register before you can help.
