SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A local conservation’s education center celebrated the birthday of a 60-year-old turtle Friday.

Tippy the turtle had his birthday party at the Wonders of the Ozarks learning facility.

Tippy was rescued by a family back in 1953. In 2005, the turtle was donated to the Wonders of Wildlife.

Now, the students in the WOLF program begin their animal handling training with Tippy.

"He was always social. So this just shows us that this is where he needs to be,” says Thomas Quinn, part of the family who rescued Tippy. “He’s even more social than when he lived in our basement. Obviously cause there's more people here. He’s doing a good job and he's gone to a really good place.”

Once a year, Mary Fry, whose father rescued Tippy, tells the new class of WOLF students the story of Tippy's rescue and his years of adventures as a family pet.

Tippy Quinn was named after the family dog that recently passed away. The dog’s name was Tipton the Third.
