The Diet Soda Dilemma

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- On average, each American drinks about two cans of diet soda per day, but even one a day is bad for your overall health.

Even though diet drinks don't have calories, they can still cause weight gain.

The intense sweetness stimulates the brain to crave more.

Also, those artificial sweeteners confuse the brain and are stronger than regular sugar. So insulin is triggered which causes the body to store fat rather than to burn it.

With weight gain aside, there are other diet soda dangers.

Citric acid in the soda causes erosion of our tooth enamel.

To put it in perspective, water has a ph level of seven while a battery has a ph level of one.
A soda comes in with a ph level just over three, which is closer to the battery end of the spectrum.

Also, the chemical BPA has been shown to cause reproductive problems. So if you're trying to have children, the diet sodas could be setting you back.

Not convinced yet? How about kidney problems?

Diet soda has high levels of sodium and aspartame, which are shown to cause problems with kidneys.

The bottom line is there is nothing healthy about diet soda.

Instead of artificial sweeteners, use alternatives like honey or agave nectar. Of course, the best thing you can do is put down the soda can and grab a bottle of water instead.
