State Senator Chappelle-Nadal Pressured to Resign After Trump Post

ST. LOUIS, Mo.-- Some politicians, including Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens, are calling for the resignation of a Missouri State Senator after she made a controversial Facebook post about President Donald Trump.

It comes after President Trump's response to the events in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal posted on her Facebook page this morning that she hoped the president would be assassinated.

She has since deleted that post, but the secret service is now investigating her.

Nadal says she was frustrated and angry. She believes President Trump supports white supremacists.

She explained her actions in an interview.

"It's just really sad that you have a president that supports white supremacists and then someone wrote a statement on my Facebook then I responded with something that I probably shouldn't have been put up there. I deleted it, but I'm not going to shy away from that for a moment," says Chappelle-Nadal.

Missouri Democratic Party Chair Stephen Webber urged Nadal to resign.  “State Senator Chappelle-Nadal’s comments are indefensible. All sides need to agree that there is no room for suggestions of political violence in America - and the Missouri Democratic Party will absolutely not tolerate calls for the assassination of the President. I believe she should resign.”

Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO) also said, "I condemn it. It's outrageous and she should resign."

"I just thought that was a disgrace to the state of Missouri for any elected official especially on the state level, a state senator to make any kind of comment like that. I think she should step down immediately," said Lt. Gov. Mike Parson (R).

Senate Democratic Leader Gina Walsh also called for resignation.  "I strongly condemn and disavow Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal's horrible comments. Promoting, supporting or suggesting violence against anyone, especially our elected leaders is never acceptable. Her behavior has no place in our caucus, the capitol, or the democratic party," says Sen. Walsh.

Gov. Eric Greitens (R) posted this comments on his Facebook page Thursday, also saying the Senator should resign.
