Item: Starbucks customers across the US will soon be able to charge their mobile device for free simply by plunking it on a table or counter. The company has created tactile charging stations built into its furnishings in partnership with Israel-based company Powermat —who is hoping that with the coffee giant’s backing, its technology finally has a real chance of going mainstream.

Why it Matters: Right off the war over free WiFi—in which coffee houses began blocking electricity ports in an effort to get more customers in and more moochers out—comes free mobile charging. While it seems to contradict the concept of getting rid of moochers, it may be a consumer magnet in larger cities where finding power outlets can be quite discouraging on the go. If you're a tourist in a major metropolitan area such as New York City, many places don’t have free outlets or access to any for charging purposes—this will give coffee shop customers a new opportunity to recharge themselves and their devices.
