St. Louis Beats Springfield in Exhibition at Hammons Field

(Springfield, Mo.) -- This is the third time that the St. Louis Cardinals have come to Hammons Field to play their Double AA affliate. 

    But this is the first time that they've come as the defending World Champions. 

    It was a standing room crowd of 10,079 on hand to welcome the world champs back to Missouri.

    A pitchers duel early with Springfield's Tyler Lyons and St Louis' Trevor Rosenthal exchanging strikeouts.

    Rosenthal went four hitless innings with four strikeouts and will join Springfield after the game.

    St Louis manufactured a couple of runs in the sixth, Tony Cruz's groundout scores Vance Albitz 1-0 St. Louis.

    Then an Erik Kamatsu sac fly makes it 2-0 St. Louis.

    The world champs added another in the seventh on this Ronny Gil shot deep to right, just fair and it's gone, he played at Quad Cities last season, it's 3-0.
    Springfield gets two back in the bottom half, the first on this Oscar Tavarez triple to the wagon gate in right center, Kolten Wong scores it's 3-1.

    St. Louis used two young pitchers in Rosenthal and Carlos Martinez and won 3-2.
    St. Louis boarded a flight back to Florida, they'll open the season Wednesday in Miami against the Marlins.

    Springfield will stay in town and open the Texas League season Thursday night against Frisco.
