Springfield Residents Speaking out Against Proposed Pit Bull Changes

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.--The topic of pit bulls was enough to bring out dozens of people to Monday's night's city council meeting.

The debate is over whether new pit bulls should be banned from living in Springfield.

It's an issue that has sparked renewed interest after two children were recently attacked by pit bulls.

52 people signed up to speak at Monday night's meeting.

It's an issue that drew a lot of criticism from people claiming the amendment doesn't solve the problem of pit bulls attacking people.

The meeting remained peaceful, but emotions ran high as people addressed the council with their opinion on the issue.

The majority agreed that the amendment shouldn't go into effect because of a few incidents of dogs attacking people.

Plus they argued that there is no way to positively identify a dog as a pit bull unless it's DNA tested.

However, this did little to sway the opinion of the parents whose children were attacked by pit bulls this summer.

"If your bathtub ever runs red with the blood of your children perhaps you might feel the same," says Travis Atwell, father whose children were attacked by pit bulls.

While council member Kristi Fulnecky recognizes the event as heartbreaking, she says that all dogs are capable of attacking people

"I have six children myself, but I've also seen pictures from dog attacks of rottweilers and German Shepherds and labs. In response to what happened to them is that we're not enforcing what we already have on the books," says Fulnecky.

City council will vote on this issue on October 2nd.

If the ordinance passes, starting January 1st, no new pit bull registrations will be accepted.

After that, only pit bull renewals will be accepted.
