Springfield Gets 1 Gig Internet Speed

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.-- The best thing about watching television news stories like this is they don't ever buffer. That's solely a frustration found online. But it's a cyber frustration 75 thousand homes in Springfield are now closer to eliminating.

"Springfield is now the 1000th city to go 1 gig," says Steve Bennett with internet provider Mediacom.

Bennett announced Wednesday, the company has now made 1 Gig internet speed available to all of its customers.

"Well if you can download a movie in 28 seconds compared to an hour, how much time have you now saved,” he says.

Springfield Mayor Ken McClure, who was there Wednesday to see the tech-reveal, says it's a technological advancement worthy of its own proclaimed holiday.

"It's my privilege as mayor to declare today,” McClure said. “Gigabit City Day in the City of Springfield."

And while it's new to Mediacom and the City of Springfield, it's hardly new to the Ozarks. You see, Nixa has had 1-gigabyte internet speed since 2015, through Suddenlink.

"I love to city cities that are in favor of that and are pushing that opportunity for their citizens."

We heard praise for these types of advancements from Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft as he stopped in Nixa this afternoon.

"I love to city cities that are in favor of that and are pushing that opportunity for their citizens,” said Ashcroft. "I'm an advocate for communities trying to create a playing field that encourages economic growth."

According to Ashcroft, this kind of internet productivity in Missouri leads to more successful industries.

"That's the American dream isn't it," the Secretary of State said.

But Bennett says he hopes to see it used in homes just as much as businesses.

"The capacity on the residential network is just as important as the commercial," said Bennett.
