Second Lawsuit Faces Reeds Spring School

REEDS SPRING, Mo.--Though his message is short, the petition filed by attorney Jay Kirksey this week was not.

"They just should've kept quiet," he says.

But what the petition lacks in brevity it makes up for in frankness.

Page one of 26 is as far as you need go to find claims of quote: "bad mouthing," and "spreading derogatory rumors or statements" by Reeds Spring School Board President Earl Johnson, board member Rob Barringer, and other unnamed board members.

"They would tell people, 'Oh if I could only tell you the whole story.' Well the whole story is already under oath," Kirksey says.

The suit is filed on behalf of Kirksey's client and former Reeds Spring faculty member Jodi Heckler.

You may remember Heckler from a sexual harassment lawsuit she filed against current Reeds Spring Superintendent Michael Mason.

It's a lawsuit the school district eventually settled to the tune of 500 thousand dollars back in February.

"From March 15th up to current, statements were made putting my client in a false... I mean totally false light," he adds.

Now, Heckler is suing again, this time for retaliation she suffered after she reported the sexual misconduct.

Kirksey explains.

"Certain defendants tried to malign or try to damage the reputation both personally and professionally of my client. You’re not supposed to attack the victim and blame the victim for what occurred," Kirksey says.

Kirksey says the alleged retaliation behavior hasn't just done damage to Heckler,

"It's a societal question, our society, we should encourage people to report wrongful conduct,” he argues.

He says its also others who suffer from similar crimes.

"Not only are hurting people for reporting but heck, you'll have more of that conduct because people will be afraid to come forward and do the right thing,” he says.

As for what the school district had to say about these new allegations?

A school spokesperson said, "We're basically going to say that we’re not going to comment because it’s pending litigation.”
