Rollover Crash Kills Illinois Driver, Injures Three Boys

JASPER COUNTY, Mo. -- Three boys were taken to the hospital and one man to the coroner's office Friday after the driver fell asleep around 10:30 a.m.

According to an online crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 34-year-old Lucas Morriss, of Quincy, Illinois, was driving the three boys, ages 13, 11 and 9, headed westbound on Interstate 44.

About 1.25 miles west of Fidelity, he fell asleep, sideswiped another vehicle, then skidded on the roadway and went off the right side of the road, according to the report. The Toyota 4 Runner, driven by Morriss, hit a sign, rolled, struck a tree and landed upside down.

He was pronounced dead 11 minutes later.

The 9 and 11-year-olds - who share Morriss' last name and had moderate injuries - were from Coppers Cove, Texas, and the 13-year-old, with minor injuries, was from Quincy, Illinois.

All four were wearing seatbelts.

This was the 117th fatality crash for Troop D in 2017.
