ROLLA, Mo. – The nation’s attention focused on Fort Hood, Texas after a shooting incident on Wednesday and the Rolla community is mourning the loss of a local connection. One of the soldiers killed Wednesday is from Rolla.

37-year-old Army Sergeant Timothy Owens died Wednesday, one of the three victims of Army Specialist Ivan Lopez, according to family.

Both Owens and his wife, Billy, attended Rolla High School.

The school principal says Billy Humphrey Owens graduated in 1996 and Timothy Owens left in 1994.

Last night, there were several posts on Billy Humphrey Owens’ Facebook page in which she expressed concern she had not heard from her husband.

"I appreciate all your prayers, concerns and love,” Billy wrote. “I ask that you respect me and our family and our privacy during this time."

After that was a final post that said "during the Fort Hood tragedies unfortunately my husband Timothy Wayne Owens was one of the fatalities. I appreciate all of your prayers concern and love. We ask for our privacy at this time. I can't or won't talk. Thank you, Billy Owens.”

There was an outpouring of support from the Rolla community, including people sharing prayers and well wishes about this tragedy.

While KOLR10’s Laurie Patton has talked to family members, they do not want to go on camera at this time.
