Report: Woman Dies After Being Bitten - Caretaker Charged

CHEROKEE VILLAGE, Ark. -- An elderly woman has died after being repeatedly bitten last week.

Jennifer Lea Collins, 55, was arrested May 12 on charges of aggravated assault and abuse of an endangered or impaired person.

An affidavit in the case states that the Cherokee Village Police Department received an assistance call after ambulance personnel found the victim, Jane Sanderfur, and Collins lying in a pool of blood on Thursday, May 11.

The document states the victim had part of her chin bitten off, and her entire left nipple had been bitten off. Sandefur also had bite marks on her face, hand, arm, and leg.

Police say Collins had blood on her mouth when they arrived, and was not making sense when attempting to answer questions from police. The report also noted the suspect smelled of alcohol. After receiving a search warrant, police conducted a blood test, which was sent to the Arkansas State Lab in Little Rock for analysis.

Sandefur’s son, Scott, told police that Collins had been hired to be his mother’s caretaker.

The victim, her son, and Collins were taken to the White River Medical Complex Emergency Room. The Spring River Chronicle reports that Sandefur later died from her injuries.

Charges are expected to be updated in the near future.

Cherokee Village is located along the Fulton/Sharp County line.
