In a press release, Greene County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Patterson
announced that Rachel was charged with first murder in the first degree of Mark
Staudte, her father, and Shawn Staudte, her brother. Rachel was also charged
with assault in the first degree and armed criminal action for seriously
injuring her sister, Sarah Staudte.

The events of these crimes took place from
Patterson cautions that the charges contained in the felony complaint are allegations and that the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.
In the statement, Neal McAmis, the detective assigned to the case, said that he brought Rachel to police headquarters to speak with him about the case after receiving information indicating she was possibly involved.
After initially denying any involvement in the deaths, Rachel admitted her involvement when confronted with the evidence obtained.
"Rachel told me she and Diane researched and planned the crimes," said McAmis. "She said they were 'doctoring' the victim's drinks with anti-freeze. Rachel said they did their research on the Internet and decided to use anti-freeze because it was hard to detect and could be easily mixed in the victims' drinks."
After McAmis interviewed Rachel, he re-interviewed Diane, who eventually
admitted that she and Rachel planned, researched and committed the crimes
