SOUTHWEST Mo. -- Law enforcement officers in at least three area towns are observing the coming St. Patrick’s Day holiday this weekend with stepped-up enforcement programs to combat drunk driving.

Billings, Hollister and Ozark are among the towns around the country where officers will be out in full force for “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” crackdowns Friday night through Monday.

“Billings Police officers will be aggressively looking for drunk drivers during the crackdown,” says Billings Lt. Karl Cuschieri. “We want to remind everyone that getting behind the wheel drunk is a terrible idea (and) simply not worth the risk.”

“Every year, about a third of all motor vehicle traffic deaths involve one or more impaired drivers or motorcycle operators,” Hollister Police Chief Preston Schmidt says.

The St. Patrick's Day weekend is particularly dangerous, Schmidt says, and his officers will be involved in “high-visibility enforcement” this weekend.
