Tyler Nelson Coons, 23, of Springfield, is charged with six counts of second-degree statutory rape, three counts of enticement of a child and one count of attempted enticement of a child.
According to a probable cause statement, police were alerted to Coons’ activity when the father of a young girl saw Coons’ private Facebook messages to his daughter.
In the Facebook messages, Coons told the girl he was 14 years old and wanted to “meet up so they could make out.” The father of the girl began sending messages to Coons, pretending to be his daughter. During the messages, Coons agreed to meet at a Springfield school.
When the girl’s father arrived, he met a man on the playground who said his name was “Frank” and he was 19 years old. The man denied being Tyler Coons. The girl’s father told the man not to have any more contact with his daughter.
According to the probable cause statement, when the father returned home, he confirmed the picture on Tyler Coons’ Facebook matched the man he met at the school.
The father contacted police, who served a search warrant to Facebook, Inc. to receive Coons’ account activity from January 1, 2014 to June 20, 2014.
Police say the requested records were over 8,000 pages long and contained mostly private messages between Coons and young girls who stated their ages ranged from 11-17.
In the messages, Coons frequently said he was younger than his actual age.
After Coons was arrested, he told police he had sexual intercourse with five girls who he knew were all under the age of 17. He also said he told each of the girls that he was younger than his actual age so they “wouldn’t think (he) was a pedophile.”
Coons was arrested July 11 and his bond was set at $175,000. His bond was reduced after a hearing July 18 to $100,000.
Coons posted bond on Monday, July 21, with bond conditions including 24/7 house arrest.
A bond appearance hearing is scheduled for July 24 at 9 a.m.
