The area African American community has been celebrating the 4th day of August since 1865, the date that news was received of the end of slavery.
It was officially called Park Day in 1952 when the once one-day gathering was first created.
Saturday’s events featured the Park Day reunion picnic, tennis, golf, a reunion dance, and the park Day Reunion Parade.
Now the event spans three days of varying activities, and is sponsored by the Springfield Reunion Club, The Springfield-Greene County Park Board, Ladies Civic League, and the local branch of the NAACP.
The theme for 2014 is ‘Continuing the Tradition’.
Sunday’s main events will feature gospel singing at 3:30 pm followed by the Miss Silver Springs Beauty Pageant at 6 pm.
