The Onion Lampoons Buzzfeed Website with ‘ClickHole’

Item: Satire website The Onion has launched ClickHole,  its BuzzFeed-esque media publication that trades in so-called “clickbait.” Articles vary between such gems as “16 Pictures Of Beyoncé Where She’s Not Sinking In Quicksand,” and “You won’t Believe How Cheap This Stock Video Of A Woman Sitting On A Swing Was.” It’s complete with listicles, inane quizzes and embedded advertising. Since this is The Onion we’re talking about, more than likely we’ll see many people not realizing that ClickHole is in fact, fake.

Why it Matters: There is currently a revolt against “clickbait” as social media sites become flooded with games, quizzes and lists from popular sites such as Upworthy and Buzzfeed. While this type of popcorn content is a quick read and a fun escape from the day, it’s not really content in the sense that it is original or thought provoking. Lackluster content across the web is leading to user outcry aimed at creating a new digital renaissance—one that offers both intriguing and relevant information instead of click-worthy headlines and shallow articles.
