ItemThe Italian food chain has begun rolling out its redesigned décor and logo—part of a re-branding effort to ditch its reputation as a corny family restaurant for one that’s slightly more sophisticated, but retains its family friendly charm. The effort also includes smaller lunch portions, faster dine-in service, and online ordering. The long overdue update signals the beginning of the company’s strategy to win back customers lost to companies such as Chipotle and Panera Bread, which offer freshly prepared food at lower prices.

Why it Matters: We’re moving into an interesting time for restaurants, one where everything is sleek and clean with a touch of sophistication. The problem here, is that everyone is doing it—and you can’t tell them apart. The concept of cookie cutter design that plagues suburbs is now moving into commercial spaces as companies begin to create familiar feeling, comfortable spaces that are near clones of each other regardless of the restaurant style.
