Nixa Transformer is 'Toast', More Robust Grid Coming Soon

NIXA, Mo. -- A Nixa transformer is "toast," a city employee says as Nixa Utilities comes up with a plan to get the city back on track.

On June 4, Nixa's Espy substation transformer failed at one of the city's four substations, causing the city to ask citizens to conserve electricity.

The three other substations are distributing power through the city but the Espy one, with a 25MVA transformer, was the largest.

"The bad news is that the Espy substation transformer is toast," says electric department supervisor Brian Denney. "The good news is we have a plan for a short-term fix while we look to buy a new transformer."

An older, 12MVA transformer sits at the downtown substation but a newer unit replace it earlier this year.

According to a news release, the city plans to move the older transformer to the Espy substation temporarily while the city buys a newer transformer.

On June 20, the city will move the 12MVA transformer across town and connect it to circuits, making the system more reliable.

Nixa is planning on having at least a 25MVA transformer installed by February, ultimately making the grid more robust than before the outage.
