A group called "The Missouri Club for Growth" distributed flyers encouraging people in Nixa to vote against it.
The Missouri Club for Growth is a St. Louis based organization. Its mission, according to the group's website, is to eliminate wasteful spending and scale back the size of government.
Nixa school leaders feel the group's flyers are very misleading. They say this vote would not increase taxes and they will put the money to good use.
"I have no idea why an outside group would pick on Nixa," says Nixa Schools Superintendent Dr. Stephen Kleinsmith. "I just for the life of me wonder what their real mission is."
That's what KOLR10 News set out to find.
"We have not found another school district that has received anything like this from this organization," says Nixa Schools Communications Director Zac Rantz. "That could change, but at this point in time we have not found anyone else that has."
KOLR10 News made calls to St. Louis based organization "The Missouri Club for Growth," but got no response.
"It's disheartening to think a group from the outside -- an outside entity-- would come into Nixa and try to influence our taxpayers in such a way that would be counter productive to the students that we serve," says Dr. Kleinsmith. "All 6,000 of them."
If the bond issue passes, FEMA safe rooms across the district will be able to hold over 7,000 people. It will also fix overcrowding problems in the junior high.
"It's very important this bond issue passes," says Dr. Kleinsmith. "We will put it to good use and it's very important the taxpayers see it that way."
The district says the levy rate has been the same for the past ten years.
"We would certainly ask our community continue to trust us in educating the children of this community, it's something we are passionate about," says Dr. Kleinsmith. "And to not be misled by outside entities that come in and spend lots of money trying to influence a school district hours away from where their home base is."
